Gig Mindset Circles

Why Gig Mindset Circles?

Since I published The Gig Mindset Advantage in 2021, people have written to me about how strongly they identified with the gig mindset, asking me how they can bring that kind of work culture into their organization.

We have seen that top down change initiatives rarely work. We also know that individuals cannot bring change bottom up alone . The most effective way to bring about lasting change is to work with other people to assess the situation, determine priorities, and to move into action step by step. Movements across organizations often catch leaders’ attention!
One way to do this is to create “Gig Mindset Circles“.

What exactly is a Gig Mindset Circle?

Gig mindset circles are small groups of people who are motivated by the desire to help make their organizations more purposeful, creative and resilient. They meet regularly to assess, share and advance. They go through interactive exercises described in the Gig Mindset Circles MEMBER Handbook.*

Circles can be organized and facilitated by individuals inside organizations, at any level and in any function. Or they can also be led by independent advisors, as part of their service offer. The facilitator uses the Gig Mindset Circles FACILITATOR Handbook.*

Gig Mindset Circle facilitators get together in a Slack community with myself to discuss  progress, challenges, and share stories. The Slack space has documents and links to videos about the gig mindset.

How do the Circles work?

The Gig Mindset Circles Member Handbook is a series of 12 exercises, each with three steps. Each step triggers ideas and conversations from complementary perspectives.

Conversations in the circles can take place in person, online or a combination of both.

Step 1: Assessment.

A series of questions asks you to evaluate your own context. You can discuss the topic and questions with other members. It is useful to note your thoughts, comments and answers in the Handbook.

Step 2: Further Exploration.

This step starts with a real life case study or extract from  The Gig Mindset Advantage. It includes questions for further discussion. The purpose is to deepen the discussion beyond your own case, and  to bring new details and inspiration to your thinking

Step 3: Investigation.

At the end of each session, you are asked to give yourself an internal research assignment to do before the next get-together. Several will be suggested, but it is up to you to decide which one is the most relevant. You can of course define something completely different!

How is The Gig Mindset Advantage used in Step 2?

Note that Step 2 – Further Exploration – asks you to take a look at case studies and examples from my book The Gig Mindset Advantage.

Steps 1 and 3 operate independently of the book and reading the book is not a requirement although I highly recommend it. The material referenced is based on firsthand research from 2018 to 2020 with organizations around the world. It may well be useful  to share later with management if you decide to build a business  case or action plan.

My publisher, Figure1, offers a significant reduction on bulk purchases if you’d like to order copies of the book. If so, get in touch and let me know.

How much do the Handbooks cost?

Nothing. They are free, published under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License.

Why did I decide to make them free?

My goal is to find people around the world who are interested in creating and joining the circles because they, like myself, want to bring change within organizational life and more meaning to the workplace.
